• Seceded from the Union after
the Louisiana legislature voted
to leave the United States in
order to defend slavery and its
economy

ADMIRAL DAVID FARRAGUT
• The naval commander for the Union navy
• Bombarded Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip,
which led many Confederates to burn their
cotton stockpiles and merchandise
• After he captured the city, he turned it over
to Benjamin Butler
• Executed the Anaconda Plan, which seized
the Mississippi River and split the
Confederacy in two and eventually caused
the Confederate surrender

• Became the Union leader of New Orleans after
the takeover
• Put together a program to feed the hungry
• Organized citizens and freed slaves to clean up
the city to avoid yellow fever outbreak

• Closed schools until they could be changed to
stop teaching Confederate jargon
• Confiscated Confederates valuables when they
were occupied to help newly freed slaves and
poor and misfortunate civillians
