A transitive verb is a verb that expresses an

action directed toward a person, place,
thing, or idea (a Noun)

Typically an ACTION verb

The receiver of the action is called an

OBJECT


EXAMPLE: Tamisha ENTERTAINED the
child.

SUPER SPECIAL HINT

Find the subject and the verb and ask what

or who. If you can answer that question, it
is a TRANSITIVE verb.


EXAMPLE: Computers make calculations
incredibly quickly.

ASK: Computers make WHAT?

ANSWER: Calculations.

Make is being a TRANSITIVE verb.

Intransitive Verbs

Intransitive verb tells something about the

subject or expresses action without having
an object to receive it.


HINT: LINKING VERBS ARE
AUTOMATICALLY INTRANSITIVE!


EXAMPLE: The children smiled.


EXAMPLE: The horses galloped across the
prairie.

HELPFUL HINTS

Linking verbs are always intransitive.

If there is a preposition directly after the

verb, the verb is intransitive.

Ask yourself about the hint for transitive

verbs—


Example: I am here.

ASK: I am what? No answer. I am Who? No

answer. AM is an intransitive verb.
