Transitive Verbs
■ A transitive verb is a verb that expresses an
action directed toward a person, place,
thing, or idea (a Noun)
■ Typically an ACTION verb
■ The receiver of the action is called an
OBJECT
■
EXAMPLE: Tamisha ENTERTAINED the
child.

SUPER SPECIAL HINT
■ Find the subject and the verb and ask what
or who. If you can answer that question, it
is a TRANSITIVE verb.
■
EXAMPLE: Computers make calculations
incredibly quickly.
■ ASK: Computers make WHAT?
■ ANSWER: Calculations.
■ Make is being a TRANSITIVE verb.

■ Intransitive verb tells something about the
subject or expresses action without having
an object to receive it.

HELPFUL HINTS
■ Linking verbs are always intransitive.
■ If there is a preposition directly after the
verb, the verb is intransitive.
■ Ask yourself about the hint for transitive
verbs—
■
Example: I am here.
■ ASK: I am what? No answer. I am Who? No
answer. AM is an intransitive verb.
