Roles Explained …….
11
• Most teachers take on a variety of roles within the classroom ,
in order to facilitate learning in their classrooms.
• These roles are
• Resource Provider
• Curriculum Specialist
• Classroom Supporter
• Mentor
• Leader
• Coach
• The Controller
• Facilitator
• Prompter
……………and the list goes on
12
CONTROLLER
The controller is the one in which teachers are effectively in
charge of the class and of the activity in a way that is quite
different from an activity where the students are working on
their own.
In this classroom, the teacher is mostly the center of focus,
the teacher may have the gift of instruction, and can inspire
through their own knowledge and expertise, but…..
• Does this role really allow for enough student talk time?
• Is it really enjoyable for the learners?
13
PROMPTER
• The teacher encourages students to participate and makes
suggestions about how students may proceed in an activity.
The teacher should be helping students only when necessary.
• Sometimes learners are reluctant to participate. There can be
various reasons for this including fear of making mistakes,
uncertainty of what to say or how to start etc.
• By asking questions (sensitively) a teacher can often get
learners to be more active. When learners are literally ‘lost for
words’, the prompter can encourage by discreetly nudging
students.
14
LISTENER
• Listening to the learners helps the teacher to
know how they are doing, what they are good
at, what they are finding difficult etc.
• Starter teachers often find listening to their
learners difficult as they are concentrating on
what they are doing and what is going to
happen next.
• Encourage them to make notes while they listen
to the learners to help them remember and give
feedback.
15
PROVIDER OF INPUT
• Selecting the appropriate material, even if this is deciding what to
use and leave out from the course book, is an important part of the
teacher’s job. Also, by using the correct language in the
classroom, they can provide the learners with valuable input.
ORGANIZER
• Perhaps the most difficult and important role the teacher has to
play. The success of many activities depends on good organization
and on the students knowing exactly what they are to do next.
Giving instructions is vital in this role as well as setting up activities.
• The organizer can also serve as a demonstrator, this role also
allows a teacher to get involved and engaged with learners. The
teacher also serves to open and neatly close activities and also
give content feedback.
16
THE PARICIPANT
• This role improves the atmosphere in the class when the teacher takes part in an
activity. However, the teacher takes a risk of dominating the activity when performing it.
• Here the teacher can enliven a class; if a teacher is able to stand back and not become
the center of attention, it can be a great way to interact with learners without being too
overpowering.
LANGUAGE GUIDE
• The Language guide helps or guides learners to discover things for themselves rather
than telling them the answers.
ASSESSOR
• At various stages of a lesson the teacher needs to check that learners have learned
something.
• This could be done through homework, tests, quizzes or other activities where learners
need to do something with the language i.e. a role play, a controlled writing activity etc.
17
REFLECTOR
• Every teacher needs to think about how their lesson has gone. They should think
about their strengths and weaknesses so they can try to improve.
18
CONDUCIVE LEARNING
By definition, a conducive learning environment is a platform without both
physical intimidation and emotional frustration, which allows for a free
exchange of ideas.
• Many factors can affect a child's learning experience. For example
parents, and also the presence of other children can affect learning and
receptiveness.
SO WHAT MAKES A CONDUCIVE LEARNING ENVIORNMENT ?
19
ELEMENTS OF A CONDUCIVE LEARNING
1. It should be welcoming, familiar, and interesting
• Unfamiliar environments will cause the to feel stressed, which can affect his
or her learning. Classrooms with homely features can make children feel
comfortable and in turn, more receptive to learning.
2) It should be diverse
• The area should have a variety of new and interesting areas and features.
Different parts of an environment should also have different stimulation
levels so that the child is exposed to different opportunities of learning.
3) Encourage playtime
• An effective learning environment should encourage learning through play.
You can help develop hand-eye coordination by providing age-appropriate
toys, such as blocks.
20
CONDUCIVE LEARNING
4) Evoke the senses
•The environment should contain features that involve all five senses and provoke thinking,
open-ended outcomes, and creativity. For example, the learning environment should have
different colors, textures. Use the outdoors, take walks. Being outdoors gives children more
opportunities to be physically active, improves their motor skills, strengthens their immune
system. The outdoors is fun, yet calming and makes our children happier.
5) It should be social
•Social interaction between children gives access to different perspectives. A conducive learning
environment should encourage social interaction among children and also by providing them
to work cooperatively with another or encouraging social interaction.
6)
Being more socially adaptable
7)
Initiating and maintaining successful relationships in life.
8)
Greater capacity to show empathy to others.
9)
Greater self-confidence and higher self-esteem due to having a supportive environment in
childhood.
10) Having healthy attitudes towards learning.
