  • Subjects always come first and are who or what a sentence is about.

  • Verbs always follow the subject and tell us what they are doing.

  • Objects always follow the verb and tell us who or what is receiving the action of the verb

    • (Not all sentences have objects)!

  • Complements can follow the object or the verb and modify either the subject or the object of the clause.

    • (Not all sentences have complements)!

  • Adverbials can follow the object or the verb and modify the verb of the sentence.

There Are Four Kinds of Verbs

  • There are two kinds of Action Verbs

    • Transitive Action Verbs transfer their action onto an object

    • Intransitive Action Verbs do not transfer their action

  • Linking Verbs connect the subject with its complement

  • Helping Verbs create the various tenses a verb can take and also help a verb better describe an action or state

  • SVO sentences use Transitive Action Verbs

  • SVC sentences use Linking Verbs

  • SVA sentences use Intransitive Action Verbs

There Are Four Kinds of Verbs

  • If the verb is transferring its action to an object, then it is transitive


    She sells sea shells.

  • If the verb is not, then it is intransitive

    She sells really well.

  • Notice that "sells" can be either kind depending on what follows
