What are metaphors, similes, personification, alliteration, hyperbole, and repetition?

Imagery

Definition: highly descriptive language that stimulates the reader's senses.
NOT figurative language, but often contains figurative language.

Example:

  • “The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight.

Definition: A way of comparing two things using like or as.

Example:

  • The stars sparkled above us like precious jewels.

Definition: A way of comparing two things WITHOUT using like or as.

Example:

  • The eyes are the window to the soul.

Definition: Giving human qualities to nonhuman things.

Example:

Definition: Exaggeration for effect.
Hyper = excessive.

Example:

Definition: Use of the same sound or letter at the beginning of words.

Definition: repeating words or phrases to emphasize an idea.
