Discover Your Passion (P6 Post-PSLE activity)

To provide lifelong self-directed learning and SE competencies (e.g

responsible decision making), since 2020, a series of different
learning experiences that appeal to the students’ varied interests
are provided to all P6 students so that they get to experience 6
hours of programme of their choice.

29

Student Leadership

  • Opportunities are provided for every student to learn, apply and reflect on their leadership skills through the tiered leadership structure.

  • Students also exercise agency when they are given a choice to volunteer for Tier 2 to Tier 4 student leader roles. They get to choose these roles based on their interests.

  • Teachers cannot veto students’ choice but students have to go through a selection process to be selected as prefects (Tier 3) and head prefects (Tier 4).-

What are some improvements in CCE that we have made as a school over the years?

32

media

Improvement 1: Increased Student Voice and
Agency (SVA) in CCE

Agency is the capacity to set a goal, act responsibly and reflect to effect
change
purposeful action that makes a positive difference to self

/others/society

This is illustrated through:
(a) termly 3Ds plan and reflection; and
(b) yearly in-depth reflection at Parent-Child Teacher Conference (PCTC)

33

Student agency is about making responsible decisions and choices rather than
accepting those determined by others.

39

media

SVA in School-Wide Sharing

Student agency implies a sense of responsibility as students
participate in society and aim to influence people, events and
circumstances for the better.

Over the years, we have been more deliberate in giving our students
opportunities to conduct school-wide sharing on various topics
such as school values, cyber wellness and NE core events where
their voices can be heard and they can demonstrate agency by
influencing others.

2020: Bags of Love Initiative for the migrant workers building our new
school block

- Teachers facilitate the discussion over Zoom. Student researched on and
shared about some of the groups that they would like to help.
- The ideas proposed and items to be donated came from the students.
The whole school was roped in to contribute to the project.

2021: A Little Goes A Long Way Project. A collaboration with Food

from the Heart (FFTH) to organise a food donation drive.

The project was helmed by our Head Prefect and the Deputy Head

Prefects. The P6 prefects helped to plan the project and P4 and P5
prefects were instrumental in the execution of the project.

The Heads shared about FFTH and the project with the rest of the

school. Students and staff contributed to the food donation drive.
Prefects then sorted and packed the donated items.

SVA in Student Leadership

2022: Working with Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF)
The P6 prefects initiated the idea to work with CCF as they were inspired by Aaron

Tay, one of the P3 students who was a cancer survivor and CCF ambassador.

Together with CCF, they conducted an assembly talk to raise awareness about

childhood cancers and the work of CCF. They interviewed Aaron and also came up
with publicity collaterals to help promote Aaron’s jokes books as part of his
fundraising efforts for CCF.

One of CCF’s services includes a learning centre (Place for Academic Learning &

Support, or PALS in short) which caters to children who need to take time away from
school as they undergo or recover from their cancer treatment. Our P6 prefects also
engaged the preschoolers and primary schoolers from PALS and presented
encouragement postcards to them.

Improvement 2: Increased visibility of
student leaders

The visibility of student leaders (Prefects, CCA Leaders, Class
Chairpersons) has increased over the years through:

performing of duties for the school (e.g. PCTC),

planning and execution of NE core events (e.g. National Day) and
school events (e.g. Teachers’ Day Celebration),

leading and initiating VIA projects, etc.

National Day Celebration

Teachers’ Day

Celebration

53

media

Improvement 3: Increased VIA
opportunities

VIA at Zhenghua reinforces the culture of C.A.R.E as exemplified by our students who
are:
- cognizant of the current issues that are happening around them or in the community
- appreciative of what they have, and the people around them
- reflective and engage in critical thinking as they strive to solve problems
- empathetic and understand the feelings and perspectives of other people

VIA programmes provide opportunities for students to:

to take an Action to improve a situation that they care about or to show gratitude to
others who have contributed actively to the community

to promote Awareness about an issue of concern in the community

to become Advocates to inspire and influence others to make a difference in
something that they care about

54

media

Improvement 3: Increased VIA
opportunities

Progressive increased level of SVA

for VIA is evident from P1 to P6 and
across the tiered student leadership:
- School-led (for P1 to P6)
- Student-led (by P4 to P6)
- Student-initiated (helmed by Tier
3/4 student leaders)

media

55

media

Area for Growth

National Day Celebration

There is room for growth for students’ initiative to promote

active citizenry. The school would need to be more intentional
with the efforts, starting from home, to class, to the school,
community and beyond.

- As VIA opportunities are lacking among the CCAs, there will be

more intentional efforts by the different CCAs in 2023 to infuse
ViA in their CCAs.

- As ViA should start from home and school, there are plans to

introduce daily responsibilities (e.g. cleaning classrooms,
canteen) for the school.
