Indian Removal Act

​President Jackson forced Native Americans to vacate lands they had lived on for generations starting the “Trail of Tears” .  Native Americans made the journey on foot without any food, supplies, or help from the government (some were even bound in chains and marched in double file lines).  Thousands of people died along the way.

Indian Residential/Boarding Schools

​ASSIMILATION: the process in which a minority group or culture comes to resemble a society's majority group or assume the values, behaviors, and beliefs of another group

Established in the United States from the mid-17th to the early 20th centuries with a primary objective of "civilizing" or assimilating Native American children and youth into European American culture.
