English Grammar Connection
The preterite is a tense used to express an action completed at a definite time in the past. This tense is usually referred to as the past tense in English. In English, regular verbs in the past tense end in -ed.
Ejemplo:
You lifted weights yesterday. Usted levantó pesas ayer.

Preterite of Regular -ar Verbs
You use the preterite tense to talk about actions completed in the past. So far we've only done present tense verb conjugations. Let's see how our past tense is different

¡Ojo! Notice that the yo and el/ella/usted forms have an accent over the final vowel

Preterite of Regular -ar Verbs
To form the preterite of a regular -ar verb, add the appropriate preterite ending to the verb's stem.
Nadar | to swim |

Notice that the nosotros form is the same in the preterite tense as in the present tense.
Use the context of the sentence to determine the tense of the verb:
