Participles
Participles are a type of verbal.
Verbals look like verbs but serve another job in the sentence.

A participle is a verb form that acts as an adjective. (adjectives are describing words)

Past Participles: end in -ed or -en for the most part
They act like adjectives.
Ex. The deserted building was old.
Deserted describes the building.

Present Participles: end in -ing
Don't confuse them with gerunds. They act like adjectives NOT nouns.
Ex. Creaking eerily, the door swung open.
Creaking describes the door.

Participle phrases consist of participles and modifiers. They go to the verb or the punctuation.
Ex. They spied a shape lurking in the darkness.
Lurking in the darkness describes the shape.
