Adding and Subtracting Polynomials (Part 2)
2
First we have to identify what we know.
What do you know about perimeter?
What do you know about this triangle?
What do you not know?
What do we do with word Problems?
3
Perimeter can be found by adding all of the sides of the shape.
We know that the perimeter is equal to 4x2+5x+5.
We know the sides are equal to (2x2+3x+6) and (x2+3x-5)
We do not know the other side length, so we will identify it as "s".
What we know
4
Multiple Choice
How will we set up our equation with the information that we know?
(4x2+5x+5)+(2x2+3x+6)+(x2+3x-5)=s
4x2+5x+5=(2x2+3x+6)+(x2+3x-5)+s
5
Our first step will be to combine like terms.
We can use the V method to add together the like terms.
Once we do this we get
4x2+5x+5=3x2+6x+1+s
After this we will need to solve for s.
Now what?
6
We will need to move everything that is not s to the other side. We need to remember that we are moving the terms to their like term on the opposite side of the equal sign.
When moving we will add or subtract.
When changing we will divide or multiply.

How could you describe the area of the shaded region in terms of the two rectangles?
What is the area of the big rectangle?
What is the area of the small rectangle?
Some text here about the topic of discussion.
What do we know?

Multiple Choice
How would you describe the area of the shaded region in terms of the two rectangles?
The shaded region is the total of the big rectangle.
The shaded region is the sum of the big rectangle and the small rectangle.
The shaded region is the difference between the big rectangle and the small rectangle.
The shaded region is not related to the big or small rectangle.
10
Multiple Choice
What is the area of the big rectangle?
9x2-6xy+3y2
3x2+y2
11
Multiple Choice
What is the area of the small rectangle?
9x2-6xy+3y2
3x2+y2
12
Multiple Choice
If we need to find the difference between the two, then we will need to subtract 3x2+y2 from 9x2-6xy+3y2. Which of the answers below show this operation.
(3x2+y2)-(9x2-6xy+3y2)
(9x2-6xy+3y2)-(3x2+y2)
