What is the passive voice?
The passive voice (La voz pasiva) is generally used to talk about a person or object without mentioning whoever or
whatever performs the action on that person or object. This is usually to emphasize the action over the person doing it.
Passive voice
The cookies are baked at 350 degrees F.
Cars are sold here.
The food is served.
When does the store open (is it opened)?
Electricity was invented in the 19th century.
Active voice
The baker bakes the cookies at 350 degrees F.
The dealership sells cars here.
The waiter serves the food.
What time does the employee open the store?
Benjamin Franklin (and others) invented electricity
in the 19th century.

Use of passive voice occurs often with:

Ads:
○Se buscan profesores
○Este carro se vende
●
Instructions:
○Se corta una cebolla
○El horno se calienta a 350 grados F.
●
When the person performing the action is unknown or unimportant:
○La tienda se abre a las 8:00.
○La comida se sirve.
