What are adjectives?

Adjectives are used in Japanese to describe nouns. A big house. A famous building.

The Japanese language has two kinds of adjectives: い and な adjectives. Adjectives in Japanese also work with tenses. い adjectives can be conjugated according to if it's present, past, negative, and more.

How do I know if an adjective is い or な?

い-adjectives end in い. A few examples:

いい、安い(やすい、cheap)、大きい、小さい

な adjectives end in anything but い. A few examples:

好き、有名、上手

There are a few exceptions: きらい、きれい、さいわい。

いい is the exception here. いい means good. 良い is originally the kanji used. When い is removed, 良 can be read as よ or い。In Japanese, the stem is always read as よ. So the stem changes:

At the end of a sentence

このクラスは楽しい!(たのしい)

This class is fun!

この食べ物はおいしいです。

Before a noun

古い(ふるい)車が安い(やすい)ですよ。

Old cars are cheap.

お父さんは古い車に乗って(のって)います。

My dad drives an old car.

な-adjectives officially need to be used in combination with です, the auxillary verb.

です can also be replaced with じゃ.

Before a noun: adjective + な + noun

好きな人。

The person I like.

クラスでは、静かな(しずかな)少女は話さなかった。

In class, the quiet girl didn't talk.
