Old English (or Anglo-Saxon), used a different alphabet and sounded totally different from the English we speak today. Over the centuries, English changed and picked up words and bits of grammar from other languages, including French, Latin, and Greek.

And so, the English of today has roots in other languages. If you know some of the most common roots, you can often use them to find the meanings of unfamiliar words. If that doesn't work, you can use references, such as dictionaries and thesauruses.

1.3.4 Practice

The assignment for this lesson is to write a letter to a university you might want to attend someday. A college application letter states what your goals as a student are and why the university you're applying to is a good fit. Think of this letter as practice for when you might actually apply for college one day.

Do some detective work and find the name and job title of the person who is the "Head of," "Director of," or "Dean of" Admissions.

It shows you CARE and are really interested that you did some research to discover the name of the person to whom you are writing.

At this point, you've done at least a little research on the university and the program of study you're applying for. Keep going and do as much research as you need to explain why you would be a good fit for that university's program.

When you're done, you'll be almost ready to write your letter. For this assignment, you'll need to accurately use domain-specific vocabulary, or words that are particular to a field. For example, macroeconomics is a common term in business and pedagogy is common in education.

Tie everything up and be sure to thank the person for his or her time.

Don't forget to keep the entire letter in formal style. page 8
