Moods in Spanish

There are three Moods in Spanish: The Imperative, The Indicative,
The subjunctive

The Indicative Mood: is used to express regular, real, situations

The subjunctive Mood: is used to express hypothetical situations

The imperative Mood is used to Express commands or to give orders

Affirmative Tú commands (Informal)

To give someone an affirmative tú command, use the -Ud./ Él / Ella- form of the verb (the third person of
the singular). OR for -ar, -er verbs use for the tú affirmative command the infinitive verb minus the r. For
-ir you must use the 3rd person of the singular form of the verb.

Manejar - Ella maneja - Tú (you are telling Elena)¡Elena maneja con cuidado! Elena drive cautiously!

Comer - él come- ¡(Carlos) come todo tu almuerzo!

Jugar- Él juega -¡(Mario) juega con el perro!

Irregular Affirmative commands

Hacer: haz / no hagas Valer (to cost to have a value) : val

Ser : sé / no seas Venir (to come) : ven / no vengas

Ir: ve / no vayas

Some verbs that end in go in the yo conjugation; to form the command form of the verb take the
yo conjugation of the present tense and remove the ending -go.

Negative Imperative (Tu Commands)

All negative imperatives in the familiar 2nd person of the singular (tu) are expressed in the Present
Subjunctive. The Present Subjunctive is used for the Ud. Commands of formal, For the negative the no
goes before the command.

Example: ¡no comas manzanas verdes! ¡No acuses al vecino injustamente!

Subjunctive Conjugation:

Regular -ar verbs: -er and -ir verbs

Use the Present Subjunctive for the desired command: Ud./ Ustedes / Vosotros

Comer: Maria coma todo el plato que le servi.

You will use this command if you want to address the person in a formal situation (Like when an adult, or a
boss gives orders)

Estudiar: Juan estudie para el examen necesita pasar la materia.
