The 5 Types of Adverbs

by Kenneth Sahuleka

2

Adverbs are...

  • Words that are used to modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.

  • Unlike adjectives, adverbs can NEVER modify nouns.

  • Here are a few adverbs:

    • slowly, fast, mysteriously, exactly, quietly, loudly

    • and so on...

3

But there are 5 types of adverbs:

  • Adverbs of Manner (HOW)

  • Adverbs of Place (WHERE)

  • Adverbs of Frequency (HOW OFTEN)

  • Adverbs of Time (WHEN)

  • Adverbs of Degree (INTENSITY)

4

Adverbs of Manner

  • These adverbs tell us HOW an action was done.

  • Here's a few examples:

    • The young soldier folded his clothes neatly in a pile at the end of his bunk.

    • I politely opened the door for my grandfather as he stepped out of the car.

    • An orange and white cat rested lazily on the sofa.

  • These are the most common adverbs, and nearly all of them end in -ly.

5

Adverbs of Place

  • These adverbs tell us WHERE something is happening.

  • Like in these examples:

    • We went into the cave, and there were bats everywhere!

    • There aren’t any Pokémon here, let’s look somewhere else.

    • We will be sleeping inside.

  • These adverbs are usually found after a verb or object, or at the end of a sentence.
