Important Vocabulary
3
Measurement is the action of measuring something.
We can measure time, weight, height, temperature, length, speed, etc.
We use measurement because life is so much easier when we know how tall we are, what time of day it is, how cold it's going to be, or how heavy our backpacks are.
What is measurement?
4
Anything can be used to measure.
Rules of measurement:
same size object
start at the edge
no overlaps or gaps
Measurement
5
Length helps us to identify something's:
size,
how tall or long it is,
or how far away it is.

12
Let's measure objects in the classroom using nonstandard ways to measure!
13
Think about the pencils and paperclip measurements.
Think about the measurement we did with our shoes.
How can that make measuring difficult?
14
For a long period of time in human history, people used their body parts to measure. Since our bodies are all different, the measurements were varied from person to person. Making it very confusing, especially when trading with different countries.
It was felt that a standard way to measure was needed.
15
There are two standard ways that we measure the length of an object.
The U.S. Customary System and the Metric System
Units of Measuring Length.
16
Units of measurement for the U.S. Customary System are:
inches
feet
yards
miles

19
Abbreviation is “yd.”

millimeter

Metric System
30
Small units of length are called millimeters.
A millimeter is about the thickness of a plastic id card (or credit card).
Or about the thickness of 10 sheets of paper on top of each other.
This is a very small measurement!
abbreviation: mm
Millimeter
31
A fingernail is about one centimeter wide.
We can use centimeters to measure how tall we are, or how wide a table is
abbreviation: cm
Centimeter
32
Meters can be used to measure the length of a house, or the size of a playground.
Meter is approximately the width of a door frame.
abbreviation: m.

Measurements can be converted.
In order to measure an object, the measurements need to be the same size.
Converting becomes necessary in order to accurately measure an object.

43
Conversions
The basic rule is:
If you need to convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply.
Multiplication makes a number bigger!
If you need to convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide.
Dividing makes a number smaller!
