Important Vocabulary

• Measurement is the action of measuring something.

• We can measure time, weight, height, temperature, length, speed, etc.

• We use measurement because life is so much easier when we know how tall we are, what time of day it is, how cold it's going to be, or how heavy our backpacks are.

• Anything can be used to measure.

• Rules of measurement:

  • same size object

  • start at the edge

  • no overlaps or gaps

Let's measure objects in the classroom using nonstandard ways to measure!

• Think about the pencils and paperclip measurements.

• Think about the measurement we did with our shoes.

• How can that make measuring difficult?

• For a long period of time in human history, people used their body parts to measure. Since our bodies are all different, the measurements were varied from person to person. Making it very confusing, especially when trading with different countries.

• It was felt that a standard way to measure was needed.

• There are two standard ways that we measure the length of an object.

• The U.S. Customary System and the Metric System

U.S. Customary System

• Abbreviation is “in.”

• It is used to measure the height, length or even thickness of small objects.

• Abbreviation is “ft.”

• It is used to measure short distances between two places or height of an object.

• Plural: Feet

• approximately the size of your elbow to your hand.

Foot

• Abbreviation is “yd.”

• It is used to measure the distances between two places that the foot can not measure.

• A yard is approximately the distance from your nose to your finger tips.

• Plural: Yards

• Abbreviation is “mi.”

• It is used to measure long distances like distance between two cities. 

• Plural: miles
