3

Rules for Addition

  • If the signs are the same, add and keep the sign.

  • If the signs are different, subtract and keep the sign of the "larger" number.

  • Example: -5 + (-10) = -15

  • Example: -5 + 10 = 5

4

Rules for Subtraction

5

Rules for multiplication or division.

  • Think of the triangle.

  • Same signs the answer is positive.

  • Opposite signs the answer is negative.

6

Order of Operations Rule: PEMDAS

  • Parentheses-Evaluate within the brackets first

  • Exponents-evaluate powers next

  • Multiplication and Division next from left to right, first come, first served

  • Addition and Subtraction next from left to right, first come, first served

Adding Integers

If the signs are the same, add the numbers and keep the sign of the larger (absolute value) number.

EX> -3 + (-5) = -8

2 + 2 = 4

If the signs are different, subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the larger (absolute value) number.

EX> -6 + 3 = -3

8+ (-5) = 3

11

Subtracting Integers

To subtract integers, add the opposite.

EX> -4 - 6 = -4 + (-6) =-10 (add the opposite)

-5 - (-3) = -5 + (+3) = -2

(add the opposite)
