Importance of (digital) Health Literacy
16
Defining health
Health - Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO, 2005).
"The greatest wealth is health." - Virgil, Roman Poet, coined this idea over 2,000 years ago
17
Defining health equity
Health Equity - Equity is the absence of unfair, avoidable, or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically, or geographically or by other dimensions of inequality (e.g. sex, gender, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation).
Social justice in health.
Health equity is achieved when everyone can attain their full potential for health and well-being (WHO, 2015).

Defining health disparities
Image retrieved from https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:720/format:webp/1*JGFbsd9l6gpijJd23KTDrg.png
Health disparities are the metric we use to measure progress toward achieving health equity. A reduction in health disparities (in absolute and relative terms) is evidence that we are moving toward greater health equity.
19
Defining social determinants of health
Image retrieved from https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:720/format:webp/1*JGFbsd9l6gpijJd23KTDrg.png
Social determinants of health are the social, economic, and environmental factors that influence an individual's health and well-being. These determinants are external to the individual and are shaped by the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Social determinants of health can have a significant impact on a person's overall health outcomes and contribute to health inequities and disparities.
20
Defining digital health literacy
Digital Health Literacy: The World Health Organization defines digital health literacy as the ability to seek, find, understand, and appraise health information from electronic sources and apply the knowledge gained to addressing or solving a health problem. (2023)
21
How are these related?
Limited health literacy can be a barrier to achieving health equity.
When individuals have low health literacy, they may face challenges in understanding health information, communicating with healthcare providers, making informed decisions about their health, and accessing appropriate healthcare services.
This can result in disparities in health outcomes, as individuals with low health literacy may have difficulty in managing their health effectively, advocating for their healthcare needs, and navigating complex healthcare systems, leading to poorer health outcomes.

Health Literacy
23
Healthy People 2030
Healthy People identifies public health priorities to help individuals, organizations, and communities across the United States improve health and well-being.
Their 2nd overarching goal?
Health Literacy!
24
Open Ended
What is the first thing you do when you have a medical-related question?
25
Information Age
The Pew Research Center (2013) reported that 35% of U.S. adults have gone online to figure out a medical condition and that the internet is a de facto second opinion – and even first opinion – for many people (All of Us, 2022).
Google's top search hits were health-related questions, which ultimately led them to build https://health.google/
26
Open Ended
What might be an issue when a major search engine like Google creates a health-related app?
27
Importance of Digital Health Literacy
As current and future health professionals, we should strive to empower individuals to learn how to access and evaluate reliable health information to navigate personal and organizational
28
Case Scenarios Activity
There are 5 case scenarios, and you will work with your team to identify the inequity.
