RATIO: A RATIO SHOWS A SIMPLIFIED COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO
QUANTITIES.
AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE IF SOMEONE HAS ONE DESK AND TWO COMPUTERS.
Their desk to computer ratio is 1:2, or 1 to 2
The computer-to-desk ratio is 2:1, 02 2 to 1
Ratios can also be displayed as fractions, like ½

Solving Ratio Problems with Proportions
A proportion is just two equal fractions.
A brownie recipe uses 2 and
one-half cups of butter and
serves 4 people. How many
cups of butter do you need to
serve 24 people?
A six foot tall Ukrainian with a 4
foot shadow is trying to take out a
Russian tank with a 12 foot shadow.
How tall is the tank?
Ralph finishes 14 math problems in 7
minutes. How many problems can he
finish in 30 Minutes?
Make change from a $10 bill into a 4: 1 ratio

Solving Ratio Problems
Ratio Problems can be solved with a simple proportion.They're actually
easy if the proportion is set up correctly.
Two types of Problems: Part/Part & Part/Whole
Part to Part
In Lucy’s class there are 12 boys and 18 girls. Write
the ratio of girls:boys in its simplest form.
Part to Whole
In Lucy’s class there are 12 boys and 18 girls. Write
the ratio of girls:students in its simplest form.

Ratio Problems
First, determine if the question asks about one of the parts, or the total (whole)
For every Blue car, there are 3 Silver Cars. If there are 18 silver cars, how many are blue?
For every Blue car, there are 3 Silver Cars. If there are 48 total cars, how many are blue?
3 out of 36 students are left-handed. If there are 165 right handed students, how many are left-handed?
The Warriors have won 34 games and lost 30. How many losses would we expect them to have after winning 51 games?
The Warriors have won 25 and lost 15 games. How many wins should they have after 80 games?
Why Does it Matter? Because it changes the way the proportion is set up.
