• Phrases and clauses are words in a sentence that give specific information. / Las frases y cláusulas son palabras en una oración que brindan información específica.

• A phrase cannot stand alone in a sentence. It may contain the subject or predicate of a sentence, but never both, and possibly neither. / Una frase no puede estar sola en una oración. Puede contener el sujeto o el predicado de una oración, pero nunca ambos, y posiblemente ninguno.

• A clause contains both the subject and the predicate of a sentence. / Una cláusula contiene tanto el sujeto como el predicado de una oración.

Types of Clauses

​SESSION 2: RELATIVE CLAUSES

​Las relatives clauses u oraciones de relativo son frases que se unen a una oración principal y sirven para dar información sobre una persona, objeto o lugar que se ha mencionado previamente en la oración principal.

​

Son, por tanto, oraciones subordinadas que se unen a la frase principal mediante los relative adverbs or pronouns (pronombres o adverbios relativos), palabras que actúan como nexo entre ambas. Estos son: who, which, that, where, whom, whose, where, when, why. Los pronombres o adverbios relativos hacen referencia a la persona, objeto o lugar de la oración principal (lo que se conoce como antecedente) y lo sustituye.

​Defining Relative Clause

​Usamos ‘defining relative clauses’ cuando queremos dar más información sobre  la persona o cosa de la que hablamos.

Sin esa información, la oración no tendrá sentido. No es lo mismo decir … “Send me the photo” que “Send me the photo which I took of you yesterday.”
