The H.I.P.P.O Strategy

H.I.P.P.O. is a strategy historians use to plan, organize, and understand the sources they are examining. The H.I.P.P.O Organizer is not required, however, you can use the H.I.P.P.O strategies to help you analyze your sources.

Historical Context

  • Use the information in a source to make connections to what is happening in history at the time it was created. This is, putting the source in historical context!

  • Think about what was happening in the U.S. socially, politically, and economically. Think about what was happening in world history as well

Determining the audience for a source helps you understand who the author wants to speak to and why they are an important person, group, or organization to the author.

Think about the person, group, or organization that the source is meant to influence or inform. Keep in mind, sometimes an author may want to speak to more than one audience.

Intended Audience

  • Think about the reasons the author created the source.

  • Think about what the author hopes will change or happen because of what is in the document.

  • In this image, you see Thurgood Marshall at the Supreme Court after his successful argument in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Later, Marshall would be the first African American justice appointed to that court..

Purpose

12

  • Identify what you know about the author and the author’s personal background, such as occupation, education, gender, race, and family. Think about the author's condition or circumstances. For example, is the author a person of wealth or power, a political prisoner, or other advantages or disadvantages?

  • Think about how that background influences their point of view, in other words, what are their opinions and beliefs?

  • In this image, you see a civil rights activist making his point of view known that political leaders need to "wake up" on the issue of civil rights.

Point of View

Recall and review as needed the information and knowledge you have learned beyond what is shown in a source. However, you are not expected to do outside research in a DBQ. All of the sources are provided to you in a DBQ.

Think about the historical facts and information you already know about the time period of the source.

Sources are evidence of a small part of the entire period in history and do not always provide evidence of the big picture.
