Stem-changing verbs
AKA Boot verbs

2
Today we will
Review how to conjugate stem-changing verbs
Show our knowledge by taking a timed practice
Apply these verbs to lesson 4 vocabulary on pastimes/sports
3
Why are they called "Boot verbs"?
All the subject pronouns get a change in the stem of the verb before conjugating the ending.
When you circle all except the Nosotros form, the chart looks a little like a boot.
We don't learn the vosotros (only used in parts of Spain)
4
5
6
Let's break them down
7
O > UE stem change
the o in the stem changes to a ue for all forms *except* nosotros form
For example: I sleep - yo duermo ≠ dormo
We return - volvemos. Nothing changes in the stem for this form.
8
U > UE
*jugar* to play, is a u->ue stem changing verb
This is the only verb that makes this change
it has its own stem-change
9
E > IE
The verb querer (to want) has this change
Quer - er (remove ending)
Quie - (change stem)
Conjugate ending (Yo quier-o)
Not nosotros- queremos
10
E > IE
We have already learned a verb that sort of follows this pattern
The verb Tener follows this pattern except in the Nosotros AND yo formis
This makes it a "sock verb" because it only changes where a "sock" would go inside a boot
11
E > I
The verb repetir (to repeat) has this change
Repet - ir (remove ending)
Repit - (change stem)
Conjugate ending (Yo repit-o)
Not nosotros- repetimos
12
What if I forget?
Sometimes, when you do it 'wrong,' it feels wrong, like when you spell a word wrong and it just doesn't look 'right'. It will take time & practice. This is just the introduction.
Mistakes are VERY common when learning a new language and generally do not affect comprehension/understanding: people will still usually understand what you're saying
But keep practicing. You will see it like this (o:ue) in our vocab lists.
13
