Les questions en français-Reminder

OUI/NON

So far, we have learned to ask yes/no questions:

  • Using the intonation (your intonation goes up at the end of the sentence)

→ ça va ?

→ Tu habites à Riga ?

  • Using est-ce que in front of the sentence:

Est-ce que ça va ?

Est-ce que tu aimes le tennis ?

Est-ce que tu fais du football ?

Est-ce que tu joues au volley-ball ?

Qu’est-ce que questions = WH questions → What?

  • Question 1 : Qu'est ce que tu fais ? → What are you doing?

  • Answer 1: Je joue au football. → I am playing football.

  • Answer 2: Je fais du sport avec mes amis. → I am doing sports with my friends.

You can see from these examples that the answers are free and can be different.

So, the question word qu'est-ce que is for asking open questions. It is placed in general at the beginning of the sentence.

Qu'est ce que turns to qu'est ce qu' in front of a vowel.

A common and useful sentence is “Qu'est-ce que c'est ?” which means What is this?
