There are 24 different muscles that make up each arm, and they control movement of the elbow, forearm, wrist, and fingers. Compared to the five muscles of the upper arm, the lower arm contains 19 different muscles that are divided into anterior (front of the arm) and posterior back of the arm). We are concentrating on the upper arm only!

A large muscle located between the shoulder and the elbow. Its name comes from Latin meaning "two headed muscle of the arm". It helps to bend your elbow & rotate your forearm.

Biceps Brachii

The triceps meaning "three heads" is the large muscle located on the back of your upper arm. Its function is to straighten your forearm at the elbow joint.

A 3-headed muscle (tri = three). Main function to extend the forearm.

Throwing and passing a ball and shooting a basketball require use of the triceps muscle.

Triceps Brachii

The trapezius is a large muscle in your back. It starts at the back of your head and neck, extends across your shoulders, and down the middle of your back, forming a trapezoid.

Also known as traps, the trapezius muscles play an important role in posture. They move the shoulders, lift arms out to the side, and protect the neck and spine. You use them when you shrug or pull your shoulders back.

Also known as the "Traps"
