Revolution

Conceptual Understanding 4.E.3B. Earth orbits around the Sun and the Moon
orbits around Earth. These movements together with the rotation of Earth on a
tilted axis results in patterns that can be observed and predicted.
Standard 4.E.3B. 4 Develop and use models to describe the factors (including tilt,
revolution, and angle of sunlight) that results in Earth’s Seasonal changes.
I can explain and recall facts about the tilt of the
Earth and how the tilt of the Earth and revolution
results in seasonal changes.

Facts to know:
When a hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, the season is
summer because that part of the Earth is getting more direct
sunlight.
o The days are longer.
o Temperatures are warmer.
o The angle of the Sun hitting the Earth’s surface is greater.
When the hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, the season is
winter because that part of the Earth is getting less direct
sunlight.
o The days are shorter.
o Temperatures are cooler.
o The angle of the Sun hitting the Earth’s surface is lower.

Multiple Choice
When a hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, because that part of the Earth is getting more direct sunlight which season is this?
Spring
Summer
Winter
Fall
8
Multiple Choice
Which season are the days longer,
temperatures warmer, and
the angle of the sun hitting the Earth’s surface is greater?
spring
summer
winter
fall
9
Facts to know:
When neither the northern or southern hemispheres are tilted
towards the Sun, sunlight falls equally on both hemispheres
resulting in autumn or spring.
o Days and nights are about equal.
The two hemispheres have opposite seasons.
The seasons do not depend on the distance of Earth from the
Sun.
