The Indus Valley Civilization grew up along the Indus River. Its two major cities, Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, had sewage systems and used standardized bricks.

The Aryans invaded around 1500 bc and brought with them the Vedas (important writings of the Hindu gods and goddesses). They also brought with them the caste system.

India used the caste system to organize their society for over a 1000 years. There are 4 levels of castes organized by occupation. Below the castes are the Untouchables (Dalits). These people were treated poorly and faced discrimination.

The British expanded their empire into India (British Imperialism) and ruled India for around 200 years. This sparked an independence movement among Indian people.

Mahatma Gandhi protested against British rule and the unfair treatment of the Untouchables (Dalits).
