The Integumentary System

All the external coverings of the body including the skin, nails, and hair.

The outer most layer of the skin and the only layer in direct contact with the outside environment.

Epidermis

Melanin

A pigment that protects the body by absorbing some of the sun's damaging ultraviolent rays.

Dermis

A thicker layer of skin that gives skin strength, nourishment, and flexibility.

An injury where blood vessels in the skin are broken, but the skin is not cut or open.

A component of sunlight. A form of non-ionizing radiation that is emitted by the sun

Vitamin D

Substance produced in skin when exposed to sunlight.

Sensory Receptor

Structure that senses temperature and pain.

Fatty Layer

The innermost layer of the skin.
