Vocabulary: Improper Fraction

Proper vs. Improper Fractions

A proper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is smaller than the denominator, like 1/2 or 3/4

To multiply mixed numbers, you will need to convert the mixed numberi into an improper fraction, which is when the numerator is BIGGER than the denominator, such as 10/7 or 9/3.

6

Multiple Choice

An IMPROPER fraction is when...

1

The numerator (top) is BIGGER than the denominator (bottom)

Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.

Multiply the whole number by the denominator. Then, add that product to the numerator.

Convert

Multiply straight across:

Numerator x Numerator

Denominator x Denominator

Multiply

Now, convert the product to its simplest form.

If the numerator is higher than the denominator, that means there are whole numbers to find!
