Phases of the Moon (1)

From Earth, we can observe the Moon’s appearance
changing from day to day. We call these changes
phases.

The Moon’s phases repeat in a cycle about every 29
days.

Because they follow a pattern, we can predict when
each of the phases will occur.

Phases of the Moon (2)

The phases are caused by the Moon’s orbit around
Earth. Depending on where the Moon is in its orbit, a
different portion of the Moon that is lit up by the Sun is
visible on Earth.

During a new moon phase, no portion of the Moon
facing Earth is lit up by the Sun. During a full moon, the
entire portion of the Moon lit up by the Sun is facing
Earth.
