Decimal Models

Write the decimal represented by the model.

Tip: Each row and each colum has 10 blocks. If a row or colum is completely filled count by ten.

You can also think of each completed row or colum as tenths and the individual blocks as hundredths.

Word form is how we say numbers out loud or write them using words. When reading a number it is broken up into parts of three using commas and the decimal point.

The decimal point will always say and the commas will say thousand, Million, and Billion

Read The Sections

When reading a number it will be broken up into sections by commas and the decimal point. Read each seperated part from left to right.

In the number 32,458.09

Read 32 first. The comma tells you to say thousand.

Then read 458. The decimal will tell you to say and

Last read 09. When a decimal is read the place value of the final number needs to be stated so say hundredths

34

Expanded Form

Expanded form is breaking the number up in the same way but using an addition sign to show all of those numbers belong together.

7,538 broken into expanded form would look like

7,000 + 500 + 30 + 8

If there is a 0 in a number like the 0 in 308 that place value can be skipped.

35

Expanded Form Tricks

Write the number undreneath for each digit. The expanded form of 45,023.98 would look like the example on the write. Now each number just needs an addition sign.

45,023.98

36

Multiple Choice

Write 45,023.98 in expanded form

1

40,000 + 5,000 + 20 + 3 + 0.9 + 0.08

2

40,000 + 5,000 + 20 + 3 + 0.09 + 0.08

3

40,000 + 5,000 + 20 + 3 + 0.90 + 0.8

4

4,000 + 500 + 20 + 3 + 0.09 + 0.8

37

Multiple Choice

Write the expanded form of 325.09

1

300 + 20 + 5 + 0.09

2

300 + 25 + 0.09

3

320 + 5 + 0.09

4

325 + 0.09

38

Expanded form to Standard

When switching from expanded form to standard the same trick is available. You can line up each number and put the numbers in the correct place value. 4,000 + 500 + 6 + 0.8 + 0.09 would look like

4,000

500

6

0.8

0.09

4,506.89
