Compare and Order Whole Numbers

You can order three numbers by deciding which number is the greatest or least. Then compare the remaining two numbers. Order 1,237; 1,054; and 1,145 from least to greatest. Start by lining up the numbers based on place value.

Expanded form

Expanded for is breaking a number apart based on each digits place value. When the number 536 is written the number 5 is not worth 5 but 500 because the 5 is in the hundredths place. The three is worth 30 and the 6 is worth 6

Expanded Form

Expanded form is breaking the number up in the same way but using an addition sign to show all of those numbers belong together.

7,538 broken into expanded form would look like

7,000 + 500 + 30 + 8

If there is a 0 in a number like the 0 in 308 that place value can be skipped.

Write the number undreneath for each digit. The expanded form of 45,023.98 would look like the example on the write. Now each number just needs an addition sign.
