A Review on Mixtures
●
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that do not combine
chemically.
○
They can be separated by physical means, such as evaporation or filtering.
●
There are two types of mixtures:
○
Heterogenous
○
Homogenous
4
Heterogenous
Homogenous
●Hetero: different
●Consists of visibility
different substances
●Can be separated by
filtering
●Homo: same
●Uniform appearance
throughout
●Commonly referred
to as solutions

Solutions
●
A solution is a homogeneous mixture
●
The components are not chemically combined and retain their original properties
●
Can be physically separated
●
A solution is made up of solutes and solvents:
○
Solutes are the substance that is dissolved
○
Solvents are the substance that dissolves the solute
6
Solute
Solvent
The dissolved
substance
The most abundant
component of a
solution and does the
dissolving.

7
Notes on Water
●
Water is called the “universal solvent” because it has the ability to dissolve
many substances.
●
Recall, aqueous is a solution where water is the solvent.
8
Unsaturated
Has less than the maximum
concentration of solute dissolved
Saturated
Has the maximum concentration of
solute dissolved (can see solid in
bottom of solution)
Supersaturated
Contains more dissolved solute than normally
possible (usually requires an increase in
temperature followed by cooling)
Solubility: the ability of a substance to form a solution
9
1.Add more solute than solubility
allows
2.Heat the solution
3.Slowly cool the solution down
Solution is unstable in this state
