So let's talk music!
What if we were able to read music? What if we could pick up a new piece of music and sing or play it right away? What fun that might be! To do this, we need to get to know some of the basics – or elements – of music.
Why do different songs sound different? Why can we recognize and tell the difference between certain songs? There are two basic elements of music that make a song sound like itself: rhythm and melody.
12
Rhythm
The Rules of Rhythm
So, we know that rhythm means the pattern of sounds in time. These patterns must follow some general rules to make sense to our ears:
steady beat
time signature

4/4 time signature
This looks like a common fraction but is a time signature. It tells you how many beats in a measure (top number) and the bottom number tells you what kind of note gets one count. For example:
4/4 - 4 beats to a measure, each quarter note gets one count
6/8 - 6 beats to a measure, each eighth note gets one count
3/4 - 3 beats to a measure, each quarter note gets one count.
18
Multiple Choice
4 beats in a measure and a quarter note gets one beat
4 beats in a measure and a half note gets 1 beat
4 pickles drive a car and the hamburger saves the day
4 measures equal 4 beats

3/4 Time signature
Tap three times on your knee. That is a measure of three! We usually call a measure of three a “3/4 measure,” pronounced “three-four measure.” We will learn more about this later. Let’s take a look at a song that is grouped in 3/4 measure or time signature. The lullaby “Rock-a-bye Baby” has notes that are grouped in three. Sing or say the song while tapping on your knee. You will naturally be tapping in groups of three. It will sound like what you see below (the underlined words are the start of a new group of three):
Rock a bye ba -by
On the tree- top.
When the wind blows
The cra -dle will rock.

Multiple Choice
What does this 3/4 time signature mean:
Three beats to a measure, each quarter note gets one count.
Three measures in the song.
Three out of four people will be able to read this.
Four beats to a measure and repeats three times.
