Vocabulary

Mass(Masa)-A measure of how much matter is in
a substance.

Matter(Materia)-Anything that has volume and
mass.

Law of Conservation of Energy (Ley de la
conservación de la energía) - energy can
neither be created nor destroyed - only
converted from one form of energy to another.

Graphic Organizer
Thermal energy

What it is: A measure of the total energy of the motion of an object's
particles.
How is it different than heat and temperature?
Heat is the thermal energy that is transferred from one place to another.
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of an object's
particles.

What impacts it:
Type of material: Different substances have different properties. Some
substances transfer thermal energy more readily than others, such as cooking
oil while others transfer thermal energy less readily than others, such as
water.
Amount of material: Less thermal energy is needed to raise the temperature
of a smaller volume of material than a larger volume of the same material.
Environment: The environmental surrounding of a material affects the energy
transfer within a substance. In a cold environment more energy is needed to
change the temperature of a material. A hot environment reduces the amount
of energy needed to raise the temperature of a substance.

Hook Directions

1. Complete this activity in pairs within your group.

2. Have one person hold the thermometer in his or her fist to
determine the skin temperature of his or her hand. Put the
thermometer down and record the temperature in the data table
below.

3. The same person briskly rubs his or her hands together.

4. The second person readies the thermometer to quickly insert
into one fist of the person rubbing his or her hands.

5. At the end of 20 seconds, quickly place the thermometer
into the same fist as was measured before to determine the
temperature of the hand.

6. Record the temperature reading in the data table and answer
the following questions.

Students take three samples of three different liquids, all at the same
temperature, and place the samples into three identical beakers. They place all
three beakers onto the same hot plate. Which of the following observations would
support the idea that the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of
matter, depends on the nature of the matter?
A.

Before heating, the initial masses of the three different liquids were slightly
different.

B.

After turning off the hot plates, all the liquids eventually returned to room
temperature.

C.

Some of the heat from the liquids was transferred to the air around the
beakers.

D.

After the same amount of time, the three samples were at different
temperatures.

Explore 3: Environment Matters

18

Question: How does a change in the environment
affect thermal heat transfer?

Hypothesis: A colder environment will have
slower thermal energy transfer than a warmer
environment.
