Pre-Assessment
Before we dig into the topic of Genetics, let's see what prior knowledge you already have. Answer the following questions to the best of your ability. This is not for a grade!

Vocabulary
Chromosomes - threadlike structures that contains all DNA, come in pairs
Genes - determines traits, comes in pairs
DNA - molecule that carries the genetic instructions
Alleles - variants in a gene
Genotype - the genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype - the physical appearance of an organism based on its genotype
14
The study of heredity, which is a biological process where a parent passes certain genes onto their offspring
Genes are inherited from both parents through sexual reproduction
These genes express specific traits or characteristics
Genetics

16
Gregor Mendel
Father of Genetics
Discovered the basic principles of heredity
Experimented on pea plants and showed that their traits follow a particular pattern
7 different traits - flower color, flower placement, plant height, pea color, pea shape, pod color, pod shape
17
A characteristic or feature of one organism that is inherited
In humans: freckles, eye color, dimples
In animals: coat texture, coat color, face shape
In plants: flower color, plant height, leaf shape
Inherited Traits
18
Describes how likely it is for certain phenotype traits to pass from parent to offspring
Dominant Alleles - show their effect with only one copy of the allele - shown with a capital letter
Recessive Alleles - show their effect with two copies of the allele - shown with a lowercase letter
Dominant/ Recessive Alleles
19
Both dominant traits are expressed - like a blending of the two traits
Ex. a cross between a white flower and a red flower and the offspring is a pink flower
Codominance
A cross where one allele is not completely dominant over another, so a mixture of both are seen
Ex. - a black and white bunny
Incomplete Dominance
Non-mendelian Genetics
20
Codominance
Incomplete Dominance
21
Homozygous vs Heterozygous
Homozygous recessive - carries two copies of the recessive allele (aa)
Homozygous dominant - carries two copies of the dominant allele (AA)
Heterozygous - carries one copy of the dominant allele and one copy of the recessive allele (Aa)
22
A diagram used by geneticists to determine the probability (chance) of an offspring have a particular phenotype
One set of alleles go on top
Other set of alleles go down left side
Punnett Square
23
Draw
Draw a Punnett Square crossing a heterozygous parent and a homozygous recessive parent.
