Using Qui, pourquoi, que, qu'est-ce que, and quoi

 To ask who, use qui.

 Qui can be used at the beginning or at

the end of the question.

Qui va gagner le match de
foot?
Tu as telephoné à qui ?
Il voit qui?
C’est qui?

Qu’est-ce que always goes
at the beginning of the
question.

Qu’est-ce que tu vois?
Qu’est-ce qu’ elle va faire demain?
Qu’est-ce que vous regardez à la
television?
Notice that after the qu’est-ce que,
that there is a subject and a verb and they are not inverted.

Using Qu'est-ce que

​The subject and verb must not be inverted!

The subject comes before the verb when using qu'est-ce que to ask what.

Qu'est-ce qu'on prend pour le petit dejeuner?

Qu'est-ce que vous faîtes pendant les vacances?

Qu'est-ce qu'elle va porter à la danse?

Quoi is used to ask what.
Quoi always goes at the end of the question.
Quoi only refers to things, never
people.

Nous allons manger quoi?
Il voit quoi?
Avec des crèpes, vous buvez quoi?

Use 'que' to ask 'what'.

​Que or Qu' must be used at the beginning of the question. The subject and verb must be inverted.

Qu' avez-vous pour un mal de dos? (backache)

Que fais-tu après les cours?

Que lisons-nous maintenant en anglais?

The word Où means where and is used to ask 'where'.

It can be used at the beginning, middle, or end of the question.

​Using où in a question

-​'Pourquoi' is used to ask 'why'.

-It is used at the beginning or end of a question or after a statement to make it a question.

-Often the response contains 'parce que' which means because.

Using 'pourquoi' in questions

1. Tu aimes nager? Pourquoi?

2. Pourquoi est-ce que tu aimes nager?

3. Elle est furieuse? Pourquoi?

4. Pourquoi est-elle furieuse?

5. Pourquoi est-ce que tu ne manges pas aujourd'hui?

6. ​ Pourquoi ne manges pas -tu?

If the verb is not inverted, you must add est-ce que/qu' to the question.

If the verb is inverted, you do not add est-ce que/qu to the question.
