What are articles?

Articles are words that we use before nouns

The three English articles are:

  • 'a'

  • 'an'

  • 'the'

Indefinite vs. Definite

Definite articles (the) are used when we are talking about a specific noun.

Example: "The dog" is talking about a specific dog, we know the exact one.

Indefinite articles (a or an) are used when we are not talking about a specific noun.

Example: "A dog" could be talking about any dog, we do not know the exact one.
