Medieval: monophonic, often vocal music, can be sacred (in latin) or secular ( in different languages), written in Modes (not diatonic scales),

Classical : clarity, balance, beautiful melodies - shorter and clearer than Baroque, contrast within the same piece

Romantic: unstructured, passionate, full of energy, long melodies,dramatic, nationalistic themes, dynamic instrumentation

Modern: unique irregular rhythms, common dissonances, no particular form

Impressionism:fluidity ( lack of strong rhythmic pulse), atmosphere ( how the music feels), tone colour ( the quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument from another

Contemporary music: fewer melodic lines, dissonant harmonies, complex rhythms, complex rhythms, pecussiveness, greater use of percussion, brass and woodwind, use of synthetic and electronic sounds.

Fugal: characterized by systematic imitation of a principal theme ( subject) with melodic lines sounding at the same time ( counterpoint
