The Organization of the Human Body

• The average human has somewhere between 30 and 40 trillion cells in their body

• Cells are organized in a hierarchy of systems

  • Tissues

  • Organs

  • Organ Systems

Tissues

• Tissue: A group of similar cells that perform a certain function

  • Four types

    • Epithelial tissue: tightly packed cells that cover the internal and external surfaces of the body (Example: Skin)

    • Connective Tissue: Cells scattered in an external matrix (Example: Blood)

    • Muscle Tissue: Cells that can contract

    • Nervous Tissue: Transmits information from one part of the body to another

Organs

• Organ: a combination of tissues that create a structure in the body that has a specific function

  • It contains multiple types of tissues

• All parts of your body are organs

Organ System

• Organ System: a set of organs that work together to perform a particular bodily function

  • The Human Body has 10 organ systems in total

Homeostasis

• Homeostasis: The maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment

  • Making sure things stay the same

  • Most of the body's activity goes towards maintaining homeostasis

    • Shivering when cold

    • Breathing harder when exercising

    • Sweating when warm

    • Left Hemisphere: math, reasoning, language and fine details

• Contains wrinkles that increase surface area and allow for more neurons

Parts of The Brain-The Cerebrum

• Contains four lobes

  • Frontal Lobe: Controls reasoning, speech & voluntary movement

  • Parietal lobe: takes in touch information

  • Occipital Lobe: Controls vision

  • Temporal Lobe: deals with sound and language

Parts of The Brain-The Thalamus

• Receives information from different parts of the brain and filters it for the cerebrum

• Responsible for emotions

• Controls bodily drives

  • Hunger, thirst

• Regulates body temperature, blood pressure, and the internal clock

• Manages Hormones
