The Human Body Part 1
2
Lesson Objectives
Describe how parts of the body are arranged
Understand the hierarchy of cells
Describe the parts of the brain and what they control
3
The Organization of the Human Body
The average human has somewhere between 30 and 40 trillion cells in their body
Cells are organized in a hierarchy of systems
Tissues
Organs
Organ Systems
4
Tissues
Tissue: A group of similar cells that perform a certain function
Four types
Epithelial tissue: tightly packed cells that cover the internal and external surfaces of the body (Example: Skin)
Connective Tissue: Cells scattered in an external matrix (Example: Blood)
Muscle Tissue: Cells that can contract
Nervous Tissue: Transmits information from one part of the body to another
5
Organs
Organ: a combination of tissues that create a structure in the body that has a specific function
It contains multiple types of tissues
All parts of your body are organs
6
Organ System
Organ System: a set of organs that work together to perform a particular bodily function
The Human Body has 10 organ systems in total
7
Homeostasis
Homeostasis: The maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment
Making sure things stay the same
Most of the body's activity goes towards maintaining homeostasis
Shivering when cold
Breathing harder when exercising
Sweating when warm
8
Reorder
Order the following from the simplest to most complex
Cell
Tissue
Organ
Organ System
Body
9
Match
Match the following Tissues to their descriptions
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle Tissue
Nervous Tissue

The Brain
Your Brain controls all of your body, both mentally and physically
Five main parts
Brainstem
The Cerebellum
The Cerebrum
The Thalamus
The Hypothalamus
14
Parts of The Brain-The Brainstem
Controls most of your involuntary activities
heartbeat, breathing, digestion
Manages your circadian rhythm
The pattern of changes in your body over 24 hours
15
Parts of The Brain-The Cerebellum
Controls all motions you perform without thinking
Manages balance, posture, coordination and Fine movements
16
Parts of The Brain-The Cerebrum
The Largest part of the brain that deals with voluntary actions
Split into two hemispheres that each control the opposite end of the body
Right Hemisphere: spatial relationships, music, creativity
Left Hemisphere: math, reasoning, language and fine details
Contains wrinkles that increase surface area and allow for more neurons
17
Parts of The Brain-The Cerebrum
Contains four lobes
Frontal Lobe: Controls reasoning, speech & voluntary movement
Parietal lobe: takes in touch information
Occipital Lobe: Controls vision
Temporal Lobe: deals with sound and language
18
Parts of The Brain-The Thalamus
Receives information from different parts of the brain and filters it for the cerebrum
19
Parts of The Brain-The Hypothalamus
Responsible for emotions
Controls bodily drives
Hunger, thirst
Regulates body temperature, blood pressure, and the internal clock
Manages Hormones
