118. 1st Grade SRR: Odd Sounds at Night

Bear held his breath. Bobcat did, too. Before long, the odd sounds started again.

“Cree! Coo, cree! Cree! Cree!” Bobcat yelped and ran back to his dark corner. He wanted to hide.

Bear held onto the flashlight. He took a few deep breaths. “Don’t hide, Bobcat,” he said. “We’ll find out what it is. You’ll see.”

Bobcat peeked out and then came back to Bear. He gave him a weak grin. “I would give good money to know what that sound is,” Bobcat told his pal.

“Stick with me,” said Bear. “Be brave! We are safe. We can find out what it is.”

Then something flew past them! “Cree! Coo, cree!”

Bobcat yelled with fright and leaped into Bear’s arms. Then Bobcat jumped up and ran to try and hide. He shook with fright.

Bear grunted and picked up his cap. He turned on his flashlight and looked right and left. He looked up and down.

“I must be brave!” Bear said to himself, but he did not feel very brave just then.

Then Bear looked up in time to see a dark blur as it flew into a treetop. It perched and made that odd sound.

“I see it, Bobcat!” whispered Bear. “We can catch it. Let’s go up. We can do this!”

Bear and Bobcat went up the trunk and made it into the treetop without a sound.

Bear and Bobcat followed Crow deeper into the tree’s branches. “Look up in the sky,” said Crow. “Look at the moon! It is full. It will light up the zoo.” The three pals sat and looked up at the bright moon.
