Social Emotional Learning

Here at NorthBay, our goal is to teach and practice social emotional learning (SEL) with our students. We use the environment as a metaphor for students’ lives and make connections by using theme words (Niche, Invasive Species, Degraded Condition, Filter, Action, Transformation). We use this terminology throughout the day and talk about them during cabin time discussions. In addition, we've added CASEL competencies to our social emotional learning curriculum. The CASEL competencies are a list of skills that we hope to instill in our students’ lives, as well as our own lives.

Social Emotional Learning

Why SEL?
A study published by the Journal of Adolescent Health showed that students who underwent SEL programs were 42% less likely to say they were involved with physical aggression.
Additional research showed that there was a 5-12% decrease in school dropout rates when associated with SEL.
Another source reviewing 82 school based SEL sessions involving kindergarten - high school students showed an increase of 13% in academic achievement with SEL.

Studies have shown that children need about 50% assistance in understanding and processing their emotions. This is referred to as "co-regulation". It is crucial for us to remember this as we interact with young humans who are experiencing mood swings and who have very little knowledge or access to coping skills. When they are here we have about a week to show them new skills or methods of tackling a jumbled mind. Which is why everything we do has intention and purpose.

Social Emotional Learning

In order to successfully help children co-regulate, research has shown that caregivers should:

-Provide a warm, nurturing, supportive relationship
-Assist in problem-solving more complex academic, behavioral, and social situations
-Model conflict resolution strategies
-Prompt and coach coping skills and calm-down strategies, including self-talk and relaxation
-Teach and support organization and planning skills needed for academic success
-Provide opportunities to make decisions and self-monitor behavior
-Continue to provide clear rules, structure, and consequences in a calm manner
