Both the compass and the map should be used. Without the map, Jimmy would only have the direction for North but would not know where to go. Contrariwise, a map used singularly would be rendered useless as Jimmy would not know which direction he should face to proceed on to his destination!

As you can see, Jimmy has found the map that would lead him to his mom's house. Along with the compass, the map allowed Jimmy to find his way around and eventually reached his mom's house.
