Direct Instruction & Centers

“Informal” Formative Assessment- End of direct instruction
Something that is quick that students can answer on a whiteboard, workbook, or
show you. Lets you know who has or hasn’t grasped the skill. Pull students same day.

“Formal” Formative Assessment- During/ At the end of centers (exit pass and/or student
notes) Assessing after they had time/practice with the teacher and the digital lesson.

Centers:
Teacher should be pulling 3 groups daily for reteaching of skills or enrichment.

Teacher center- utilize manipulatives, whiteboards, and foundational guidance (Online
under instructional materials).

Utilize these to create and monitor small groups during center time

Zearn Student Digital Lessons/Centers
All students should be working on Digital Lessons. There are some that will finish and should have
something else to work on (Enrichment).

1.Digital Lesson Components
a.

Fluency

i.Number Gym- Adaptive (Untimed)

ii.Sprint- Related to lesson (Timed- will eventually
give them answer. Can change individual students
to untimed.)

b.

Guided Practice: Video lesson (Reviews skill and asks
Questions. Students use Student Notes (Workbook).

c.

Tower of Power: Answer Questions (If students get the
answer wrong , it will provide guidance. If they continue
to get it wrong, it shows students answer and gives a
similar problem. (Will alert you- see reports)

d.

Bonus (Unlocked through Tower of Power)

Key Points:

a.Model 2-3 Digital Lessons so
students understand the
routine.

b.

Give students what they need
to complete the fluency
(Multiplying by 7)

c.Do not need to print out
problem sets (Direct
instruction, Formative
Assessment, Exit Pass, Digital
Lessons, Teacher Center)

d.

It’s ok if students are behind as
long as they are in the same
Mission.

Zearn Reporting

Pace Reports: Shows students last login, current lesson, and the number of lessons they’ve
completed each week

Class Reports- Progress Reports: This real time report shows what mission students are on,
and where in that mission students are. *The arrows show if they have completed lessons
in another grade level.

Tower Reports: Record which lesson and areas students struggled on (Great for planning
mini lessons)

Sprint Reports: Records which students are struggling with fluency practice (alerted if they
get less than 10 fluency problems correct)

KINDERGARTEN: Activity Tracker Report: Shows when students last logged on, how many
activities they have completed, and where they are at along the math progression.

Wondering how to get started using class reports. Click HERE to checkout a short
video, or dive into individual reports below., by clicking on their title.
