1

Atomic matter

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is made up of atoms. Atoms contain even smaller parts called protons, neutrons, and electrons.

2

Multiple Choice

Matter is anything that has ________ and takes up ________.

1

mass, space

2

weight, area

3

Atomic model

Scientists have developed a model of what the inside parts of atoms look like. In very simple terms an atom's parts are located in two spaces, the nucleus and in energy levels or shells that are around the nucleus. In the nucleus of every atom you can find one or more protons and neutrons. A proton is a positively charged particle and a neutron is a particle that has no charge. Electrons have a negative charge. Electrons orbit the nucleus in the shells or energy levels.

10

Periodic table of the elements

During the time of Aristotle, people thought that everything was made up of a combination of air, fire, water, and earth. Today we know that there are a certain number of elements that make up all matter on Earth.

11

Elements

Each element is represented by a symbol of one or two letters that stands for its name. The elements are listed in rows horizontally in order of their atomic number and in columns vertically in families, or groups. These families share similar chemical properties.
