​Article คือ อะไร

​คำนำหน้านาม มีอยู่สามตัวด้วยกันคือ a, an, และ the 

ซึ่งทั้งสามตัวนี้ มีหลักการใช้ที่แตกต่างกันออกไปดังนี้

​1.  Article a

ใช้กับคำนามเอกพจน์ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะทั่วไป

เช่น a cat, a dog, a tree, a building

​ตัวอย่างประโยค

·     A cat is climbing a tree. (แมวกำลังไต่ต้นไม้)

·     There is a building near my house. (มีตึกอยู่ใกล้บ้านฉัน)

​2.  Article an

​ใช้กับคำนามเอกพจน์ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ (a, e, i, o, u) 

เช่น an orange, an apple, an island, an eye

​*บางคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย a, e, i, o, u แต่ไม่ใช่เสียงสระ เช่น unity, university, ukulele (ออกเสียง ยู)

จะไม่ใช้ an แต่ใช้ a แทน เป็น a unity, a university, a ukulele

​ตัวอย่างประโยค

• An apple is on the table. (มีแอปเปิลอยู่บนโต๊ะ)

• Can you grab an orange for me, please? (คุณช่วยหยิบส้มให้ฉันหน่อยได้ไหม)

​คำศัพท์บางคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยตัว h แต่ไม่ได้ออกเสียงตัว h และตามหลังด้วยสระ

จะใช้ article an เหมือนสระแทน เช่น 

• an heir (อ่านว่า แอน แอร์) ทายาทหนึ่งคน

• an honesty (อ่านว่า แอน ออน'นิสที) ความซื่อสัตย์

• an honor (อ่านว่า แอน ออน’เนอะ) ความเคารพ, การนับถือ   

•  an hour (อ่านว่า แอน เอา’เออะ) หนึ่งชั่วโมง เป็นต้น

​3.  Article the

​1. ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่มีเพียงหนึ่งเดียว เช่น the sun, the moon, the earth, the world, the universe
2. ใช้กับการพูดขั้นสูงสุด เช่น The best, The most beautiful place in the world.
3. ใช้เมื่อพูดถึงเครื่องดนตรี เช่น the piano, the guitar
4. ใช้ The + adjective พูดถึงคำนามที่เป็นกลุ่มคน เช่น the elderly (พวกคนสูงวัย), the young (พวกเด็ก ๆ), the rich (พวกคนรวย), the homeless (พวกคนเร่ร่อน), the sick (พวกคนป่วย)
5. ใช้กับสถานที่และธรรมชาติ แม่น้ำ ทะเล มหาสมุทร ภูเขา เกาะ เช่น the sky, the river, the sea, the Himalayas, the Hawaiian Islands

​6. ใช้บอกลำดับ เช่น The Second World War, the first mission, the sixth channel, the fifth page
     7. ใช้กับชื่อบางประเทศที่เป็นหพูพจน์ (มี s ต่อท้าย), ชื่อประเทศที่มีคำ kingdom, republic, state หรือมี of รวมอยู่ด้วย เช่น The United States of America, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, The Philippines (ยกเว้นประเทศลาว Laos)
     8. ใช้นำหน้าชื่อครอบครัว (เป็นพหูพจน์เสมอ) เช่น The Potters (ครอบครัวพอตเตอร์), The Beckhams (ครอบครัวเบคแฮม)
     9. ใช้นำหน้าตำแหน่ง เช่น The president, the Queen, the professor, The Prime Minister

​บางครั้งจะไม่ใช้ Article นำหน้าคำนามเมื่อพูดถึงสิ่งทั่วไปที่เป็นพหูพจน์ หรือสิ่งต่าง ๆ โดยรวมทั้งหมด เช่น
     I don’t like durians. ประโยคนี้พูดถึงทุเรียนทั่วไป ทุเรียนทั้งหมด
     I don’t like the durians we bought yesterday. ประโยคนี้พูดถึงทุเรียนที่ซื้อมาเมื่อวาน มีการเฉพาะเจาะจง จึงใช้ the

​คำนามบางประเภทที่ไม่ต้องใช้ Articles เช่น
     1. ชื่อเฉพาะต่าง ๆ เช่น ประเทศ, เมือง, รัฐ, ตำบล, ถนน, ซอย เช่น I live in Bangkok.
     2. ชื่อทวีป เช่น She travelled across Asia.
     3. ชื่อภาษา เช่น I don’t speak English.
     4 ชื่อมื้ออาหาร เช่น I have my breakfast at seven o’clock.
     5. ชื่อวัน เช่น Monday morning she was stiff and tired.
