Es la una. - It’s 1:00 o’clock

Son las dos. - It’s 2:00 o’clock

Any hour from 2:00 on will start
with Son las.

Son las…y - It’s … (time).

y cuarto - quarter past

y media - half past, thirty

Son las tres - It’s 3:00 (o’clock)

Son las cinco y cuarto - It’s 5:15

Son las nueve y media - It’s 9:30

Es la una y cuarenta y cinco - It’s 1:45

To tell time before the hour

Example: It’s ten till three. (2:50)

Use the next hour minus the number of minutes.

Son las tres (the next hour) menos diez.

In a country that doesn’t use a 24-hour clock, the a.m. and p.m. are differentiated
by the following expressions:

de la mañana (in the morning)

de la tarde (in the afternoon)

de la noche (in the evening or at night)

It is 10:00 a.m. → Son las diez de la mañana.

It is 1:00 p.m. → Es la una de la tarde.

It is 7:00 p.m. → Son las siete de la noche.

Midnight and Noon

12:00 a.m. → Es medianoche.

12:00 p.m. → Es mediodía.
