REMINDER: Your class project is due this Wednesday, October 4th
It's worth 25% of your Q1 grade! Reminders have been placed in the Google
Classroom multiple times, and verbally given in class.
You don't have to wait until Wednesday. If you've done an original project (not an AI
project, or someone else's project, go ahead and turn it in. Remember to follow the
rubric. I've received a few already and they are creative and genuine.
Thank you to everyone who has put in the work,
and turned their projects in.

Today’s Focus
NEW: Interpreting Functions
CLUSTER: Understand the concept of a function and use function notation.
Today's Standard:
B.F.IF.A.1
Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range)
assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and
x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of f corresponding to the input x.
The graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x).
B.F.IF.A.2
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements
that use function notation in terms of a context.
B.F.IF.B.3
Recognize functions as mappings of an independent variable into a dependent variable.
11
Today’s Focus
Today’s Learning Target:
I WILL…
● determine whether a relation is a function.
● identify the domain and range of a relation.
● map each element from the domain to a unique
element in the range.
● represent mathematical relationships using graphs.
● use function notation to evaluate functions for
inputs in their domains.
12
What are the characteristics of a function
and how can you use those characteristics
to represent the function in multiple ways?
ESSENTIAL/GUIDING QUESTION
13
CONTENT VOCABULARY
write these down in your notes
• FUNCTION - a special relationship between two sets of numbers, where each
input number (called the domain) is matched with exactly one output number
(called the range).
• DOMAIN: The set of all possible input values (x-values) for a function.
• CODOMAIN: The set of all possible output values (y-values) for a function.
• RANGE: The set of actual output values produced by a function for all possible
input values.
• FUNCTION NOTATION: The way functions are written, such as f(x) or g(t),
where the variable inside the parentheses is the input.
14
CONTENT VOCABULARY
write these down in your notes
• ELEMENT - Each object that belongs to a set.
• SET: A collection of distinct, well-defined objects forming a group.
• ORDERED PAIRS: A pair of numbers written in a specific order.
15
Complete the Guided Notes and bring
back to next class. Use the Student Edition
of the PowerPoint located in the Google
Classroom.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
16
Turn in any outstanding homework
assignments you may have.

17
IN YOUR OWN WORDS:
INSTRUCTIONS: Pretend the teacher is your little sibling. Your job is to explain
what a function is. Use the space below, if needed. Examples to help with
the explanation may include mapping or relation sets

TEACHER NOTES
Functions in Tables
HERE'S WHAT WE'VE LEARNED SO FAR
● A function has one input and only one output.
● A function can be identified via a table, a set of ordered pairs,
mapping, an algebraic expression, and with a graph (which we will
see shortly).
● When we are evaluating a function, the x-value is given to us and we
must replace the value wherever we see "x":
f(x) = 2x - 9; where x=7
f(7) = 2(7) - 9
= 14 - 9
= 5
