What is Expanded Form?

  • Numbers in expanded form are like equations based on place value.

  • 63 = 60 + 3

  • 800 + 40 + 9 = 843

  • 80,000 + 90 + 8 = 80,098

Mastering Multiplication: Multiplying by Tens

When multiplying a number by 10, the product is always the number followed by a 0.

  • For example, 23 x 10 is 230. (Which is like 23 tens.)

  • It is not correct to say that 23 x 10 is 23 add 0.

  • Remember, multiplying by 10 always tags a 0 at the end. It's a simple and useful trick in math!

14

When we multiply by ten, we are moving one place left on the place value chart. Any place missing a digit, needs a zero.

  • 1 x 3 = 3

  • 10 x 3 = 30 (three tens = 30)

  • 100 x 3 = 300 (three hundreds = 30 tens = 300)

  • 1000 x 3 = 3000 (three thousands = 30 hundreds = 300 tens = 3,000)

15

Multiple Choice

What is the result of multiplying a number by 10?

16

Do you notice the pattern?

  • 1 x 5 = 5

  • 10 x 5 = 50

  • 100 x 5 = 500

  • 1000 x 5 = 5000

Each place value is ten times greater when moving to the left.
If I move multiple jumps, I have to do multiples of ten. For example:

  • From the ones to the hundreds is x10 x10 (or x100) Skipping two places

  • From the ones to the thousands is x10 x10 x10 or x1000) Skipping three places

media

21

So if I have the number 16,562

  • The six in the thousands place is 100 times greater than the six in the tens place

  • (I skipped two places)

22

In the number 34,239

  • The value of the 3 in the ten thousands place is 1,000 times greater than the value of the 3 in the tens place

  • (I skipped 3 places)

23
