BE CAREFUL: Gerunds and participles look very similar to one another. Gerunds act as nouns while participles act as adjectives.

Direct Object - answers "What?"
Object of a Preposition - comes after a preposition (in, on, of, by, for, etc.)
Appositive - set off with commas, can insert "is" before the phrase
