Gerundive Phrases - a group of related words, starting with a gerund, that acts as a noun

Can act as:

  • ​Subject - telling who or what the sentence is about, usually comes at the beginning of the sentence

  • Subject Complement - comes after a linking verb (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been)

  • Direct Object - answers "What?"

  • Object of a Preposition - comes after a preposition (in, on, of, by, for, etc.)

  • Appositive - set off with commas, can insert "is" before the phrase

Subject Complement

Eating a big meal fills me up for the entire day.

The gerundive phrase acts as the subject of the entire sentence.
