What Are Weighted Averages?
Fill in the blanks on your notes.
· A weighted average is an average where different __IMPORTANCE(WEIGHT)_ is placed on different parts of the data set.
· To find the weighted average you _MULTIPLY_ the category average by the weight given to the category.
· For _PERCENTAGES(GRADES)_, you add your weighted averages.
· For other types, you add your weighted values and _DIVIDE BY THE NUMBER OF VALUES_. |

Weighted Averages for Grades- Steps
Step 1: Convert to decimal for all percentages weights
Step 2: Find average for each grading categories.
Step 3: Multiply each decimal to its average
Step 4: Sum all up from the results.
Note: Here are the formulas for calculating weighted averages. You use weighted averages for calculating grades and GPA!

Find a Weighted Average - Example
A lifeguard was collecting data on the average age of swimmers at Adams Park Pool on June 10th.
Of the total swimmers 60% of the swimmers were girls, 40% were boys.
If the average age of the girls was 14 and the average age of the boys was 12, what is the average age of all swimmers on June 10th?
12
Find a Weighted Average - Example Solution
Girls: 60% avg age of 14
Boys: 40% avg age of 12
To find the weighted average
(.60x14) + (.40x12)
(8.4) + (4.8) = 13.2 avg age of swimmers
