1

Blood is made in the bone marrow

  • Bone marrow is inside of bones

  • All blood cells start off as the same stem cell and then differentiate as they mature

2

Types of Blood

  • There are three types of blood that your body makes

  • Red blood cells - transports oxygen throughout body

  • Platelets - Involved in clotting

media

3

White blood cells

  • Your Immune System!!

  • Lymphocyte - B Cell

  • Stored in lymph nodes

  • Receptors on their cell surface bind to antigens

Components of the Blood

  • Plasma- About 55% of our blood. It is the liquid part of blood. It is mostly water.

  • Red blood cells- They are red because of the hemoglobin.

  • White blood cells- larger than red blood cells, and they have a nucleus. WBC help to defend against bacteria and viruses that get into the body.

  • Platelets - little fragments of cells. If a blood vessel gets damaged, the platelets help the blood to clot and seal the wound.
